Historical Fiction
I recently finished Diana Gabaldon's Voyager series which I really enjoyed, the history intertwined with the story always intrigues me. I felt the same way after reading Jean Auel's Earth Series. How much research time do you think the author's spend on the books? Or do you think they write them in the time frame because they always were interested in the particular time period?

I know in the case of Auel , she spends tons of time on her research. She is so amazing. I loved her Clan and the Cavebear works.

Philippa Gregory is an excellent writer of historical fiction. Her books focusing on the Tudor period are must-reads for anyone who enjoys a bit of Royal intrigue!

If you prefer your history a bit more ancient, then you can't go far wrong with Simon Scarrow. his Roman series, following the lives of two Centurions, Macro and Cato, are some of the best fiction I have ever read. The characters are down-to-earth and sympathetic, the action is exciting and gritty, and the writing is superbly timed. He also has a new series (two books released so far) set during the Napoleonic war - gripping stuff!

I enjoy the writing of E.V. Thompson. There has not been one book of his that I didn't have to keep turning the pages. Very descriptive writing with a history lesson thrown in for free of life and times of the 1800's in England and far flung places. My husband and I both grab for a new book found by this author as we are both hooked by his style. So if you like to read about working families who have left the shores of the homeland to travel and start new lives, who get mixed up with factual events of history along the way, then this is an author I would strongly recommend.

RE: Historical Fiction
Has anyone read The Green Bronze Mirror By Lynne Ellison?

Karen is playing on the beach when she finds an ancient mirror buried in the sand. She looks into it, and is transported back in time to the Roman empire. Finding herself a slave, she faces many hair-raising adventures in her struggle to return to her own time.
