Michael Palin's travel books
I read Palin's Himalaya a while ago, after being captivated by the TV programme. He has a charming way of telling a story and some of the scenery was awe inspiring. I am at present - in between my fiction - reading Palin's Full Circle which tells the tale of his travels around the Pacific Rim. I'm about half way round, so still got some travelling to do.

I wouldn't say that you get anything extra from the books. It's just a different, more leizurely, way of appreciating the same material. I've also got Himalaya on a DVD box- set and this is probably the best way of all to enjoy it, because it's such a visual experience.
